MZ ES150 1966 Piston rings make lots of noise

Beitragvon peterDK » 6. November 2020 13:06

Hello dear friends. A special call for help from the north station of MZ lovers, her in Denmark. I a link to a video from the cylinder area where it can be heard what I believe must be piston rings. This motor has always had that increased The strange thing is that this motor always have had this high clattering from the cylinder, but now the motor is fully refurbished with crankshaft, bearings and cylinder "honing" and piston. But the sound is exactly the same as always. The shop in Germany who made restoration suggested that it was the carburettor, I changed that to a new MZA carburettor. Sound is still there the same. The sound seems in direction from the cylinder area when I listen. I could buy another cylinder, no problem, but I would like to hear some from some of you. The mechanic shop where it got made has no idea of what it is. When the engine is cold there is no noise at all, but after 1-2 km it sounds like in the audio file Please listen to the audio file, any help will be much appreciated

Hallo liebe Freunde.
Danke trotzdem

Hi,
I don't think the ticking comes from the pistonrings, it sounds more like one of the conrod bearings, or the piston deck is hitting the head.
Cheers,
Hans

When you increase the rpm, the bad noise go's away.
I think it might be the primary drive.

Which parts exactly did you change?

There's a sound which means that anything is shaking/rattling. Remove the carburator cover and try again. It might not come directly from the cylinder. On my TS the key rattles in the ignition lock while it's in the idle. It sounds horrible. But there's no problem since I know where the sound is coming from :D MZ is made of steel without plastics. And metal sounds

It sounds that the slider of the carburetor needs an inspection. One reasons for this assumption beside the noise is that the noise softens when you speed up the engine.

Dissassemble the air cleaner, start the engine and push a finger against the slider of the carburator. If you do not hear the noise yet then the housing of the carburetor needs to be repaired or replaced...

I'll tell a story. I bought an ES250 / 2. The cylinder head of the TS250 / 1 with the damping rubbers was installed. The engine ran absolutely smoothly. I changed the head to the old model of the TS250 (same appearance as the ES250 / 2, only with centering collar).

Pinch edge everything was correct. When I started her, I immediately thought it was something broken. Certain sounds are similar to what you see in your video. However, my engine is not overhauled, I will do that for the next few weeks. The engine is not defective either, but drives wonderfully.

For me, this was an important finding with regard to the noise behavior of the ES250 / 2. The fan head definitely has a different noise behavior and brings out things that you have not heard before with the other head.

At the Zylinder, I can only advise you to measure everything. If the running clearance, piston taper and ring contact clearance are okay, things will not get any better with a new cylinder.

Best regards Michael

Edit: Oh, I just saw it was a little longer. Did you find the mistake?

Hello Michael

Thank you so much for your interesst ! I think that you mean that the cylinder ribbons size has a lot to do with the noise and resonans of the motor. I know that for sure. I have also a "mark 1" ES with the narrow cylinder ribbons. When you pinch its cylinder ribbons with the nail of your finger there is almost no sound, but a little dead resonance. But when I did that with the old cylinder with the big ribbons, it responded like a music harp. Now I have a new cylinder on with rubber dampings and a cylinder head in the version that is only seen on Danish imported MZ ES150's, it has rubber blocks in the head, see pictures. More people than you told me to measure here and there, but I simply don't have the skills or equipment to make any conclusions out of measure things like that, I must now conclude that the old cylinder had some kind of fault because now with the new cylinder the sound is MUCH better. Only more common pistonring sound is to be heard. Important is to be said is also that I now again have an original piston mounted instead of the Polish one that was mounted during the restauration. One skilled mechanic said that the Polish ones tend to rattle more.
Cheers and best regards Peter

Hallo,
