Hi,

I am getting conflicting information regarding transmission oil mileage change interval on my 1972 ES250/2. I can't find any regard in the original service manual, and I do not have a hard copy of the user manual but the electronic copy I got (from Miraculis?) says interval is at 20,000 km in the maintenance chart. But specifically in the section regarding the instructions on changing the oil (6.2) it says every 10,000km. Which is it?

Thanks

Hallo,

Danke

However, I would change the oil every year if you use it regularly in english weather. The introduction of the clutch bowden cable causes water to get into the transmission oil.

And you can minimize the water inflow by a good fitting Rubber cap and particularly by a good greased bowden cable ...

Thank you. So the same oil interval as a TS or ETZ @ 20k km.
I understand the concern regarding water ingress esspecially though the clutch cable entrance. I do my best there.

When I saw the 10k mentioned in the copy I have, I did wonder if the oil changes were required to be more frequent due to possible oil contamination (through wear of the gears, or the clutch material impregnating the oil, or other things) potentially being a concern because they also lubricate the main bearings and might wear the main bearings quicker.

The problem is not just the water from the clutch actuation, but the water that accumulates in the transmission oil when it rains or due to condensation. That's why the number of kilometers is simply not a decisive value; changing the transmission oil every year has simply proven to make sense for an MZ. It doesn't really matter whether it says 10,000 or 20,000 km.

From my own experience, I recommend changing the transmission oil once a year. Long journeys in the rain in particular lead to water penetrating the engine housing, which can lead to corrosion. In my case, the drive of the rev counter was rusted after the motorbike had not been used for about 1-2 months after a long ride in the rain. The oil level was significantly higher than normal because the oil had mixed with water.

The original rubber seals are now over 30 years old, the replicas (depending on the supplier) are not always durable and permanently tight. So what was not an issue 40 years ago can be a problem today ;-)

Best regards,
/Christian
