ETZ 250 Motor Moeglichkeiten

Beitragvon madmog » 19. September 2016 17:54

Hi,

Vielen Dank

I'm finally able to ride the MZ I restored and get to know the bike (and how to ride a motorbike!). So I'm starting to see the traits of the engine.

I'm wondering whether it's possible to 'tune out' the lack of torque below 4000 revs and what is the best way? Is it a matter of fine-tuning the carburettor or must the ports be enlarged also?

I want to make the bike easier to ride and am not interested in increasing power.

Somebody has said an ETZ 251 head, cylinder and barrel would give me what I want or at least be a move in the right direction. Before I start paying for anything I wanted to check with peoples' experience on this forum.

Thanks

Hi
lack of torque around 4000 is normal for 250 ETZ.
What is the number of teeth on the chain sprocket? You may try one less. Maybe even two: 18 or 17.
Check the squish clearance for width 0.9 -max 1.1 mm , not less, and make sure it does not getting narrower towards the center: squish measurement
Changing towards 251 is not necessarily better. You would also need the shorter exhaust. Head is the same for 250 and 251!
Maybe someone could add something about carburetors Bing, Mikuni...

Hi Carsten,

Standard number of teeth, 19. does reducing the sprocket by 1 or 2 teeth make much difference to top speed? I don't ride on Motorways really, just around town and windy country roads. I'd like to tour one day but in reality, country roads and to the shops.

Stupid question but if you change number of teeth, do you also change chain to have less links or do you adjust rear wheel to take up slack?

I should have said but I've already changed corroded carburettor for a Mikuni. I plan to get rolling-roaded but wonder whether adjusting or grinding the needle can compensate for a limitation caused by porting.

So is the barrel as well as the head identical between 250 and 251 - porting the same? Would a TS barrel fit?

Thanks again

PS Some interesting MZ articles from an English perspective
