I installed new tires on the SilverStar and have a question about the front wheel loose ball bearings. In the picture (not my SilverStar but similar), under the grease, there are several loose ball bearings. Are the ball bearings packed in to completely fill the race? I have gaps between the bearings like some may be missing? I cleaned and re-packed everything with new grease and the wheel is straight and true woth no play. If I need new bearings, can I please have a part number or substitute source? I have SilverStar maintenance and part manuals coming soon, so I will not bother you with my silly questions too much in the future. Thanks you for all the help so far. I still love this SilverStar!

It is absolutely OK that the bearings have gaps between the balls. If the installed bearings are from the DKF company, you will find 7 balls in a bearing. Other bearings manufacturer have 8 balls in each bearing. The balls are fitted into a bearing cage and therefore there is no ball directly beside the next one.

You are the man Berni, and yes, I have balls with seven gaps (that sounds bad in English).

But I've been told that the replacement bearing is a sealed bearing 6302-2RS 15x42x13, here:

Is this correct? Danke

Hey Donny!
If the old bearings have the same four-digit number everything´s fine.
the appendix 2RS means nothing but that you have a tight seal on each bearing side - it keeps water outside and the grease clean.
If you´d use ...-2Z bearings you´d only have a protection against dust and dirt...
So, if the measures / the number is the right one you just need to install the 2RS bearings - and forget them.
And better try to avoid "No name"-bearings, recommendations are e.g. SKF or INA ones.
G´night!
Jan

By the by: Ahm, yes, I´ll better not write any comment on someone´s seven balls...
