My name is James Roberts from BBC Radio 4. I am making a radio programme about the defection of Ernst Degner, but also about MZ and Walter Kaaden, and more generally, motorcycle racing in the 1950s and 1960s.
The programme will have a large audience and the story of MZ and motor racing in general is something I have been interested in for many years, so to have the BBC making a programme is a huge success.
Can anyone help me? I am looking for the following: Audio or video interviews (in English or German) with Ernst Degner or press cuttings. We have a budget so a fee could be negotiated. Only need a small duration. I know he was a shy man, but any audio interviews (in English or German) of Walter Kaaden would be fantastic. I know this is a long shot! I am currently talking to many useful people in the UK, but if anyone in the Zschopau area could help with their memories of the MZ racing team, I am hoping to visit Berlin with the presenter in the next few weeks and travel to the area and would love to discuss these things.
Does anyone know know the whereabouts of Kaaden's son and grandson, Norbert Kaaden and Jens Kaaden, plus his widow Ingeborg Kaaden?
Also Fidele Petry and Paul Petry. The widow and son respectively of the man (also called Paul). He smuggled Degner’s family west. He used to run a motorbike dealership in West Germany....
